Filming Your Events

If your organization is hosting an event and would either like to increase the visibility of the event or have a video recording of the event for posterity, then RPI TV is your solution. Our trained personnel can figure out the best way to shoot your event and deliver a quality production that can be burned to DVD or VHS, broadcast on RPI TV channel 6, or both. We can edit the program live or in post-production.

To start the process, we'd first like you to fill out our service request form. This will give us the preliminary information we need to start analyzing the requirements, after which we will contact you to work out the arrangements. Please note that we cannot film every request.

Because each event is unique and club availability is limited, all requests must be received two to three weeks before the event. If we are not given this window, it is unlikely that we will be able to plan the shoot, allocate equipment, and gather a crew before the event.

Purchasing Copies of Productions

RPI TV maintains an archive of everything it has produced, and these can be seen on the productions page. If you would like to purchase a copy of one of the events listed in the database, please e-mail rpitv-ops@union.rpi.edu. There is an initial cost of $10.00 per job. It is then $5.00 per hour of tape duplicated. For example, if you wanted copies of a two-hour event, the first copy would be $20.00, and each subsequent copy would be $10.00.

Advertising Slides on the Television Bulletin Board

Advertising on RPI TV is FREE! If your club/organization would like to air a slide promoting an event on the campus television bulletin board system, send the slide to rpitv-slides@union.rpi.edu at least three business days before it will be aired. We also need to know when to begin and end airing the slide. The slide must follow the guidelines listed below.

Guidelines for Slides

  1. The slide should be a .jpg file compressed at the highest quality.
  2. The slide should be 800x600 pixels.
  3. No text should be near the edges of the slide. Approximately 10% of the edges of the slide will be cut off when it's broadcast.
  4. A large, readable font, no smaller than 20pt, should be used. Try to use sans-serif fonts (Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Century Gothic, etc.).
  5. No bright colors, such as pure white, bright yellow, or hot pink should be used in large amounts.
  6. Copyrighted content (including all images used in the slide) cannot be used without the express permission of the copyright holder, except in certain fair-use situations.
  7. Each slide is only broadcast for 15 seconds at a time. If you have more information than can be read in 15 seconds, break up the information into multiple slides.
  8. Please submit the slide at least three business days before it must be aired.

The goal of airing a slide is to convey a message to the viewers. When creating a slide, you should emphasize the elements of the slide that deliver the message (in a large readable font) rather than the background pictures or anything else.

The campus television system bulletin board broadcasts slides on channels 2, RPI TV Channel 6, 13 and 50. The television bulletin board system can only be seen on campus. Several buildings on campus, such as the DCC and JEC, have televisions dedicated to broadcasting the bulletin board.

If you have any questions on broadcasting slides on the bulletin board system, or would like more information about other types of advertising, you can email rpitv-slides@union.rpi.edu.
