Candidate Speeches 2008

Posted on 14 March 2008

Are you running for a student government position this Spring? Do you want the RPI community to hear your positions on the issues and goals for RPI's future? RPI TV is calling for candidates to participate in its annual Candidate Speeches.

When Filming Is Taking Place:

Candidates may schedule a time to record their speech by appointment only. Appointments will be accepted by email (see below) between Monday, March 10 and Monday, March 23, 2007. Because of the amount of time required to edit the speeches into a final product for airing, the deadline of March 23 is firm. No appointments will be accepted for recording after this deadline.

Where Filming Is Taking Place:

Filming will occur in the DCC 170 studio (unless otherwise noted) and by appointment. The easiest way to get there is to go down the stairs at the end of the DCC Great Hall. At the lower level, you will see a door ahead to the right that leads to a flight of stairs. Go down this flight of stairs, and as you come out to the hallway, turn right. The DCC 170 studio is at the end of the hallway straight ahead on the left.

How Long You Can Talk:

Candidates for Grand Marshal and President of the Union will have no more than ten (10) minutes of airtime each for their speeches. Candidates for Senate positions will have no more than five (5) minutes of airtime for their speeches. All other positions will have no more than three (3) minutes of airtime for their speeches.

What to Talk About:

These speeches are for individual candidates. As such, candidates should talk about their qualifications, positions, and issues. In order to preserve fairness, political parties and candidates for positions other than those for which the candidate is running do not need to be mentioned. Candidates should not use time designated for their speech to campaign for their party or running mates.

What You Shouldn't Wear:

Don't wear clothing with polka dots, thin stripes, or any neon yellow or orange colors. If you're going to wear stripes, they have to be wide stripes. Try not to wear a black suit, as we will be filming against a black background and you will disappear (see above picture). If you do wear a black suit, we will encourage you to film without the jacket on. Plain colors are recommended. Similar rules apply for ties. We prefer simple, plain ties, as many ties are too busy and cause visual problems.

How Much It Costs:

All candidates will have the opportunity to record their speeches free of charge once. If additional takes are required, then the candidate will be charged fifty (50) cents per minute.

How to Set Up an Appointment:

If a candidate has any questions or is interested in setting up an appointment to record their speech, please e-mail rpitv-elections@union.rpi.edu. In the e-mail, please include your full name, the office for which you're running, and your class year.

Summary of Important Dates:

The following dates are laid out by this year's Elections Handbook. For more information on Student Government campaigns, see The Rules And Elections Committee's Website.
