GM Week Film Contest 2008

Posted on 10 February 2008

The Contest

RPI TV and the GM Week Committee have come together to host a film festival for all RPI students during GM Week 2008. First-time directors and experienced cinematographers are welcome to submit their best work, which will be screened and voted on during Midweek of GM Week.

GM Week

GM Week is an annual tradition at RPI, consisting of a variety of activities to celebrate the end of the current Grand Marshall's term and to welcome the new Grand Marshall, as well as other student government officials, into office. In the past, the week has been known for live bands, free mugs, athletic tournaments, games, and a multitude of other activities highlighting every aspect of campus. This year, RPI TV and the GM Week Committee want you to have your own place in GM Week! Just make an original film, or reenact your favorite scene and send it to us!

The Screening

All submitted films will be shown in the Armory, the center of this year's GM Week action, on Wednesday, April 2nd during Midweek. The screening will be open to all students, faculty and staff for viewing. You'll have the chance to vote for your favorites in both categories. Awards and prizes will be given out during a formal finale event where the new Grand Marshall will also be announced!

Keep an eye on this page and the GM Week publications for more details as the date approaches.

The Films

Think you could act out a scene from your favorite movie really well? Have you heard some dialogue that just begs for dramatic parody? We'll be looking for entries of at most 5 minutes in length that brings the Hollywood blockbusters to our campus. These can be funny, dramatic, or, if you're daring, aimed at one-upping the original.

Of course, if you've got your own idea, we wouldn't want to stifle your creative bent. Any film of up to 5 minutes in length that you can write, direct, and shoot is more than welcome to enter the running. Extra points if you make us laugh!

The videos are now online!

Guidelines

Because the films will be shown to a large audience, we ask that you stay within reason with your content. All films will be pre-screened for content and appropriateness. In addition, copyright violations are strongly discouraged. That said, we'd rather have you pursue an idea than be in fear of rejection during your shoot, so contact us if you have any questions about what's allowable.

Submission

You'll be able to give us your film by uploading a video file to our website, or bringing us a DVD/VHS tape (more details after you register). No films will be accepted after March 26.

Registration

Anyone can register! It takes just a minute to fill out our online form. Please register before March 1st to enter the contest (the deadline for final films isn't until March 26). Note that before you get to the form, we will ask you to verify yourself as a student by logging to RPI's Central Authentication Service with your RCS password. Don't worry, this is managed by RPI, so we won't be able to see your password or any personal information except for your RPI email address.
